There are honestly no words to describe how the ending of Little Bee made me feel. It was raw, intense, and heart-warming. Everything a perfect ending consists of.
By the end of the novel, I truly realized just how strong and unbreakable the bond between the three characters, Sarah, Charlie, and Little Bee truly is. I feel that the quote to the side (“A strong relationship starts with two brave people who are ready to sacrifice anything for one another”) truly describes the relationship between these three characters, especially with Little Bee and Sarah. Their relationship is so strong that they go to great lengths for each other. Just as how my last post talked about making sacrifices, the same is still seen in the final few chapters, except that the sacrifices that were being made during these last few chapters greatly reflects just how strong their bond really is.

Their relationship is so strong that they go to great lengths for each other. Just as how my last post talked about making sacrifices, the same is still seen in the final few chapters, except that the sacrifices that were being made during these last few chapters greatly reflects just how strong their bond really is.
The first instance where it is evidently seen that the bond between Sarah and Little Bee has become stronger, is when Sarah quits her job as a magazine editor. Instead of writing stories to satisfy the public, she has now decided she wants to further her career as a journalist and help make a change in the world ; “But I don’t want that job. I want to be a journalist again. I want to make a difference in the world." This quotation comes from a conversation that Sarah is having with one of her co-workers. Her co-worker insists that Sarah rethinks her decision of quitting her job, and although Sarah agrees to rethink, her mind is already set up. It was here that I realized that Sarah’s character had truly changed for the better, and it was all because of Little Bee. Instead of keeping her secure job, Sarah now wants to take risks, and live a new life, where she can finish Andrew’s book on refugees like Little Bee, and make a difference in the world, just for Little Bee.
One of the most suspenseful moments in the novels takes place, right after Sarah’s conversation with her co-worker. Her son Charlie, goes missing. When I got to this part, my heart was racing and I was almost at the edge of my seat, wanting to know what would happen to Charlie. Will he be found? Will Charlie remain missing as the novel lays to rest? As Lawrence and Sarah were about to start looking for him and asking people if they have seen Charlie, Lawrence tells Little Bee to call the police, so they could also look for Charlie. Now, we all know, that if the police find Little Bee, the consequences will be dire. She will be deported, and then she will probably be killed once she lands in her country.”If this policeman began to suspect me, he could call the immigration people. Then one of them would click a button on their computer and mark a check box on my file and I would be deported”. Knowing that these consequences are there, Little Bee, who clearly loves Charlie, takes the risk, and soon after, the police arrive. The good news is that Charlie was found without the help of the police, but the bad news is that the interaction between the police and Little Bee results in Little Bee’s arrest and deportation. Although Little Bee has been fearing this moment ever since she was mistakenly released from the detention centre, she does not seem to be phased by it, rather she is glad that Charlie is safe. "I was so happy to see Charlie safe, I cried. I kissed Charlie on the cheek. He twitched in his sleep, and he sighed. Through the holes in his bat mask, I could see that he was smiling in his sleep. That made me smile too.” Through this quotation, the bond between Little Bee and Charlie are seen. Just as the quote that I mentioned earlier on said, Little Bee would sacrifice even her own freedom, just too save this little boy. She obviously loves and cares for Charlie or else she wouldn't have put herself at risk by phoning the police.
Now here comes the surprising part. Little Bee gets deported, and guess who she sees on the airplane back to Nigeria? Sarah and Charlie! “I turned from the window and saw Sarah. She was standing in the aisle and she was smiling. Charlie was holding her hand and he was smiling too. He was wearing his Batman outfit and he was grinning as if he had just killed all the baddies.” This quotation truly shows how great the bond between these three characters really are. Sarah sacrificed her job, her life and Charlie’s back in England, just to make sure that no harm comes to Little Bee. Even Charlie is happy to be reunited again with Little Bee. Sarah has now put herself and her son at great risks just because she truly cares for Little Bee and could not bear to let anything happen to her. This is truly moving and ultimately shows that the bond between Sarah and Little Bee is ultimate and unbreakable.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this book and I am super happy that I chose it as my summative book. I highly recommend it for anyone, who is looking for an engaging and interesting read. What do you guys think of the bond between Sarah, Little Bee and Charlie? Are you happy with the way the book ended or are you more disappointed at the ending?
